![]() ![]() At CIM, virtually all conservatory students study with members of the Music Theory faculty. Students are encouraged to use or in order to prepare for the aural skills/ear training exam. CIM’s robust Music Theory program provides students with the aural and analytical skills that aid in the development of the perceptive and thinking musician. ![]() Students who do not take the exams (for any reason) may not enroll in any 500-level subject areas covered by the placement examinations until the exams have been completed. The BM in piano performance is a four-year, 132-unit program consisting of course work in the major (individual instruction, piano literature, functional skills, piano pedagogy, interpretation of baroque music), core music studies (theory, aural skills, music history, conducting, large ensemble) and USC’s general education and writing program. Students must demonstrate such competency in the subject area, either by passing the exams or being advised by their major professor to enroll in specified remedial courses, before enrollment in any 500-level course of that particular subject area. It is the responsibility of the student to arrive on campus in time to take the placement exam. Theory instruction is provided for every degree program, from basic musicianship and remedial courses to upper-level specialized seminars. Aural skills are the core skills used by all people involved in music. CIM’s robust Music Theory program provides students with the aural and analytical skills that aid in the development of the perceptive and thinking musician. These examinations are intended to aid the supervisory committee in determining the student's background in music history and aural skills so that the results may be used in making a study plan.Įntering graduate students take one examination in music history and literature and one exam in aural skills/ear training to show baccalaureate-level competence. ![]()
